Company K, 6th Texas (The Alamo Rifles) is an American Civil War living history organization composed of members with diverse backgrounds. The 6th TX has been in the reenacting community for over 15 years and has rapidly grown the organization to 50+ men in the ranks. We also have a civilian contingent which participates at certain events. While primarily a military organization, we do believe in being a family oriented unit.

Our company serves as a member of the Red River Battalion. Our primary military impression is that of a mid-war company of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. When called upon to galvanize and don a Federal uniform, we proudly do so as the 165th N.Y. Zouaves. Regardless of which side we portray, we pride ourselves on presenting accurate and authentic impressions.

We conduct monthly drills in order to present a well drilled and seasoned outfit. The company officers strive to make all events as memorable as possible for everyone. Officers and NCO’s are elected annually, based on the majority vote form the membership; as was also done in the 1860’s regiments. At events, we adhere to strict military discipline, campaign in the field when required, and constantly strive to gain the experience of what life was like for the common soldier in the Civil War.

Many new recruits have joined our ranks over the last several years. All recruits are trained in the military tactics of the period, with safety always being our number one priority. We have the ability to help new recruits make the transition into the hobby upon joining. The Quartermaster Sgt. maintains a supply of loaner uniforms and equipment. Although temporary, this loaner gear helps our new members gear-up and participate, while building their own impressions over a reasonable of time.

Now is the time to join our ranks! Don’t miss out on the opportunities to take part in the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War events: Shiloh, Raymond, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Port Hudson, Chickamauga, and Appomattox, just to name a few. Once these events have passed they will be gone forever, and each event is sure to provide its participants with stories to be shared around firesides for many years to come.

Visit our website at www.6thtx.org to learn more about the Alamo Rifles. To join or ranks and start making your own memories, please contact Phil McBride, the company recruiting coordinator, at pmcbride@austin.rr.com. Grab your rifle, sling your knapsack, and we’ll see you in the field.
