The men of Company B, 4th Texas (Tom Green Rifles), are all volunteers of the Texas Military Forces Living History Detachment, based at the Texas Military Forces Museum located at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. Camp Mabry is the oldest permanent military post owned by the Texas Military Forces (Texas Army and Air National Guard as well as the Texas State Guard), and was established in 1892 and is named after then Adjutant General Woodford Mabry. The museum's web site is www.texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org
The Detachment undertakes numerous living history programs each year as well as conducting a large number of programs for the active elements of the Texas National Guard and the United States Army. We take great pride in our affiliation with the museum and the Texas National Guard and endeavor to hold ourselves to the same standards as the modern armed forces while actively supporting our troops by linking them to the famous heritage of those Texas units who fought in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Virtually all members of the Company B are veteran reenactors -- many with more than two decades of experience in the hobby. They have taken part in every conceivable kind of event, from large World War II battle reenactments, World War I trench life, educational outreach and school programs, change of command ceremonies, public displays, parades, making movies and documentaries and large scale reenactments of the War Between the States. A good number of our members are veterans of the 125th, 130th, 135th, 140th and 145th anniversary reenactments. Some of our members have commanded companies and battalions at Civil War, WWI, WWII and Vietnam War events. Most of us are civilians interested in our nation's military history. A few are active members of the Armed Forces, while some are veterans. Unit members come from every walk of life and vary in age and background -- just like those who answered the call to arms in 1861.
Our unit operates as a functioning military command. It is not a club. There are no elections or dues. Rank is appointed on the basis of merit and necessity. We believe in creating and maintaining a realistic military as well as period atmosphere. Our reenactment style is "campaign" and "hard core". We feel there is only one way to do things and that is the right way. Our ambition is to come as close to experiencing the past "as it was" as possible, while doing the very best job we can to educate our fellow citizens, honor our veterans, commemorate their service and inspire our men and women in uniform today. But we also know it is important to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow living historians, and a lot of emphasis is making sure that this component of the hobby is not forgotten.
The Texas Military Forces Living History Detachment, also known as G Company in 20th Century reenacting, is always looking for like-minded individuals to join our ranks (for one time period or many). All new recruits are assigned a sponsor who is a veteran of the unit and will help you borrow equipment and guide you in purchasing what you need, as well as help you become a member of the unit. After participating in two maximum effort events (regardless of time period), recruits are eligible to be voted into full membership by the company.
Please visit our website at www.TexasMilitaryForcesMuseum.org for additional information. Anyone interested in becoming a part of our unit should contact Jeff Hunt -- the unit commander and director of the Texas Military Forces Museum -- at Jeffrey.w.hunt10.nfg@mail.mil.
