BATTALION NEWS

A Minor Change of Battalion Sergeant Major

After two years of dedicated service to the Red River Battalion, Frank Marek announced to the battalion staff his desire to step down from the position of sergeant major. It is never easy for a commander to relinquish the services of a valued subordinate, but after much consideration and respect of his request, Marek was relived of his duty with the issuing of General Order 11-05. Issuing the order also meant that the battalion staff was now tasked with determining who would become the new battalion sergeant major.

After much consideration, the battalion staff is pleased to issue General Order 11-06, appointing Jeff Gibbs to the rank of Sergeant Major of the Red River Battalion. Gibbs is formerly a sergeant in the ranks of Co. H, 9th TX. He has served in every non-commissioned officer position in Company H, and also has served as brevet sergeant major for the battalion at several events over the past couple of years. On these occasions, Gibbs’ performance earned him the respect and confidence of the battalion officers and the men in the ranks. His past actions made him a natural selection for the position.

On behalf of the battalion, the staff would like to thank Frank Marek for his service and recognize him for a job well done. It also wishes to congratulate Sergeant Major Gibbs on his appointment and is looking forward to working with him well into the future.

Red River Battalion Order of March/Battle and Wing Commanders Announced

The Red River Battalion has greatly benefited from the addition of several veteran companies over the past couple of years. First came the well-known Texas Rifles, followed by the most recent addition of hard-core Companies C & L, 1st Texas; all three companies formerly of the “old” Texas Brigade. Until recently, the battalion had been formed with all companies, new and old, placed in line of battle on an as-needed biases for each event. On October 14, 2011, during the Red River Battalion’s final formation at the Battle of Boerne Reenactment, Col. Fred Yokubaitis brought order to the battalion.

The reading of General Order 11-04 established the official order of companies in line of battle, from right to left, as follows: Company K, 6th Texas Infantry (1st Co.); Company F, 9th Texas Infantry (2nd “Color” Co.); Company G, Texas Rifles (3rd Co.); and Companies C & L, 1st Texas Infantry (4th Co.). The same order established the 1st and 2nd companies as the Right Wing of the battalion, commanded by Lt. Col. Brad Quine; and the 3rd and 4th companies as the Left Wing of the battalion, commanded by Maj. Mike Bringhurst.

It is certain that over the course of the next several years, the 150th Anniversary events will bring other companies into the battalion and the line of battle will once again have to be adjusted, but for now order reigns supreme!

Captain Bringhurst and Lieutenant Thompson Promoted

On Saturday, October 14, 2011, while encamped at Boerne, Texas, Col. Fred Yokubaitis announced the promotions of Capt. Mike Bringhurst and Lt. Jeff Thompson to the assembled Red River Battalion.

With the reading of General Order 11-02, Captain Bringhurst, commander of Company C, 1st Texas, was promoted to the rank of major and assigned to the position of Left Wing Commander of the Red River Battalion. The promotion will place Major Bringhurst in control of the two or more companies that are positioned in the battalion formation to the left of the Color Company. Major Bringhurst brings over ten years of experience and competence as a line officer. His promotion completes the battalion command structure and will insure three-deep leadership, with each officer capable of leading the battalion should the need arise.

With the additional reading of General Order 11-03, Lieutenant Thompson, commander of Company L, 1st Texas, was promoted to the rank of Captain. Captain Thompson will not only continue to command Company L, but will serve as captain of the combined Companies C/L when the need arises. Captain Thompson is a long time member of Company L and has risen through the ranks, including a prior stint as the Orderly Sergeant.
